Germany Day 5

First, I apologize for the delay between blog posts for the few of you that have expressed your anticipation for the next “episode” to read. It’s been a busy few days with orientation to work and settling into my new home. But here it is. Episode 4 of the Nomad Medic Saga.

My arrival and settling in to Germany has been significantly more challenging than anticipated. The culture shock and language barrier at the forefront. I don’t know why I was expecting people in Europe to just speak English, or that the language barrier wouldn’t be as big of a problem as it turned out to be. American ignorance.

Getting off the plane in Frankfurt and being thanked and welcomed in German by the flight staff and gate attendant sparked my anxiety. All of the side conversations taking place on my walk to Customs were in German. In that moment I had a sinking feeling like “we’re not in Kansas anymore.” Exiting the airport, all of the signs and advertisements were in German, thankfully I had a great cab driver provided by the company I’m working for to give me instructions on how to get out of the airport. I guess it didn’t sink in that I had moved to a foreign country until my arrival at the airport.

I’m staying at the Holiday Inn Express (yes they have those in Germany, I was shocked too) in Kaiserslautern. The first few days I felt trapped, no car, no understanding of the public transportation system, no understanding of the German language. But I’m starting to get the hang of things, beginning the process of adjusting to my new environment. The shock has worn off, I’m getting to know the hotel staff, my coworkers, and the surrounding area. The jet lag is wearing off too, proper sleep definitely improves mental state.

I’m working on a military base in the area as a Paramedic. Clinic based which is new to me coming from a career on the ambulance. Work is familiar though. Albeit another challenge on my plate this week, I’m at a good spot in my orientation. All my coworkers for the most part are from the states and has been here for a while, they’ve been a great resource for learning the ins and outs of, not only my job, but Germany as well. Making new friends.

I’m starting to look for apartments, that will be the next big step. I’ve rambled enough for one day, until next time.
